Embrace the Unknown: Transform Your Life with These 3 Powerful Lessons
The unknown. A new beginning. A new chapter.
There comes a time when we must leave our safe haven. We receive a call to start again —be it a new job, a new business venture, the end of a relationship, or embarking on a spiritual journey. All these experiences involve stepping into the unknown.
How do we navigate this new terrain? Who do we become in the process? How do we confront fear and doubt along the way?
I have ventured into the unknown many times. Sometimes I walked willingly; other times, I was pushed before I felt ready. From leaving a secure job during the 2009 global recession to build a hypnotherapy and coaching business, to other significant life changes.
3 Lessons to Embrace the Unknown
Here are three lessons I learned along the way. I hope they support you on your journey.
1. Our Comfort Zone Was Once Unfamiliar Territory
It’s important to remember that this current place, you now know so well, was once the fearful unknown. It took great courage to enter this new chapter.
But now, you have become a stranger to this place. It no longer feels like home. It's comfortable, yes, but there is a gentle yearning to leave.
As humans, we are part of the natural seasons and cycles of life, of endings and beginnings. When we get stuck and disrupt this flow, we hinder our own sacred potential.
2. Growth Requires Stepping Out of Our Comfort Zone
When we first receive the call to leave our safe existence, resistance will often visit. It tells us all the reasons we should stay where we are. After all, it's what we know. It's warm and comfortable. We've kept ourselves safe and protected here. This is familiar territory.
Gradually, however, we notice that life appears monochrome. Creativity becomes muted, and our self-expression feels stifled.
These are sacred nudges softly telling us it's time to leave this familiar territory. Perhaps your body starts to feel unsettled. The body always knows when it is time to begin anew.
Our personal and spiritual growth requires us to step out of our comfort zone. It won’t be perfect; it may be messy, but this is the path of growth.
3. Venturing into the Unknown Means Facing Darkness
Fear, shame, anxiety, and doubts will become our companions on this journey. We have been taught that these emotions and feelings have no place in our lives. "Transform them, reframe them, think positively, they are not real" they say.
You have the power to change this narrative and embrace them for your growth. So we hide and bury them in our caves and dark places, hidden from ourselves and others.
But these challenges can also bring valuable insights and growth opportunities. By learning to meet these feelings with compassion, we come to know ourselves in a kinder way.
By changing our relationship with our emotions, we also change our relationship with ourselves.
So, walk gently and kindly into the unknown. You will know when it is time to leave this safe harbour.
